Religious Belief and Public Debate - by Doug Schrepel
Submitted by ftcsadmin2 on Thu, 11/19/2009 - 16:11.Early in the recent deliberation over the Colorado Springs property tax initiative dubbed 2C, I penned an impassioned plea imploring us to look past our individual self-interest and reflect on the greater needs of our community. A few days later, before I had even poured my morning coffee, my ex-wife (with whom I have a good-natured relationship and share a surname) was calling me. The Colorado Springs Gazette had published my appeal and one of her clients had called her to share his annoyance.

Freethinkers of Colorado Springs Membership Meeting
315 East Costilla
Colorado Springs, Colorado
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Lou Guzman was the second son of an immigrant Mexican couple, who immigrated into the U.S almost 100 years ago. During his 20s he joined the US Navy and went to war. After that he was re-educated at UCLA and the University of Chicago. Most of his working life after university studies were spent with the US government, which during the Cold War years took him to Latin America to spread democracy. He retired from government in 1980, after which he wandered aimlessly. Then in CE 2000 his wife (a Lutheran) fortunately followed his daughter to Colorado Springs, where she and her family had settled. Then he found the Freethinkers of Colorado Springs, a group that helped him orient his personal philosophy into that fuzzy land between theism and atheism.

Sunday, June 7th Hike
Submitted by Rich on Wed, 06/03/2009 - 12:41.Weather permitting, there will be a hike on Sunday, June 7th. Chautauqua Trail 715. This is a relatively newly discovered trail. It starts on the south west edge of the town of Palmer Lake and heads towards Mount Herman. There are short sections that the trail is extremely steep (in some locations to avoid walking in Monument Creek). Overall the trail has a relatively gradual incline. I would rate this trail as intermediate in difficulty. We can decide as a group how far we would like to go up this beautiful valley (or to the top of Mount Herman).
Drinking Skeptically in Colorado Springs
Submitted by ftcsadmin on Tue, 05/05/2009 - 20:00.This months Drinking Skeptically will take place at Meadow Muffins. We had plenty of room last time, and it was quiet enough to be able to chat. The manager said the back bar area (on the left) will be open to us. Swing on by and join us for a fun time.
Drinking Skeptically is an informal social event designed to promote fellowship and networking among skeptics, critical-thinkers, and like-minded individuals.
Drinking Skeptically provides an opportunity for skeptics to talk, share ideas (and yes, drink) in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. But most of all, we have fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality.
Everyone is welcome even if you do not drink.

The Colorado Springs Skeptics present: "Homeopathy: Medicine or Magic?"
Submitted by ftcsadmin on Fri, 04/10/2009 - 15:14.The Colorado Springs Skeptics invite you to their April monthly meeting.
Homeopathy is a billion dollar industry worldwide. While the highest sales for homeopathic remedies are in France, the sales in the United States continue to grow. Homeopathy is a great example of how alternative medicine differs from that of conventional medicine. The criticisms of homeopathy apply to other alternative health treatments as well – including Reiki, magnetic therapy, therapeutic touch, and acupuncture.
This month we will get a preview of John. R.'s Skepticamp talk: "Homeopathy: Medicine or Magic." What exactly is homeopathy? Does it have any basis in science? Is it effective? Why is its use becoming more accepted?
